Fast pace equals fast reactions
Unique, creative decisions
Small team size (4 players and 1 goalkeeper)
Lack of walls encourages ball control
Why do SPORTING Blue Valley Premier teams play Futsal?
As you can see above, Futsal continues to develop the same soccer skills required for outdoor play – small team size and court boundaries demand more controlled touches on the ball by each player – raises communication amongst players and encourages creative quick full-of-action plays! In addition the game insists upon accurate passes, managing more 1V1 situations and requires players to make decisions in a matter of seconds. Due to the fact that the reduced-bounce ball is in constant motion and transition, teams work as a unit to attack or defend. So why do we play? Not only are these games fun, but Futsal is the best form of soccer in the off-season. It keeps players sharp during the winter months and provides them with a smooth transition back to outdoor soccer.
Futsal began in Montevideo, Uruguay and then Brazil in the 1930’s due to crowded cities lacking the space for entire soccer fields – these small sided games emerged. In 1936 the first rules of the game were published in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The game began to spread across South America and beyond. The first governing body was formed under FIFUSA and the word Futsal began to be used. FIFA later adopted the game and took over the World Championships in 1989. Today, there are more than 50 national leagues. Professional Futsal leagues exist in Brazil, Iran, Japan, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Russia.
SPORTING Blue Valley has been associated with the game of Futsal for over 15 years – with all Premier teams playing at this time. Practices for Futsal are held at various locations in the area, while games are played at Roeland Park Sports Dome, Mid America West Complex, Fieldhouse of KC and the New Century Fieldhouse. Two Futsal Tournaments held locally, take place at the end of the season – Futsal Magico El Clasico and the US Futsal Nationals. If you haven’t been out to see a Futsal game – there are games most winter weekends – come out, enjoy the game and support your fellow SBV teams!
